Matt specialises in insolvency, restructuring and finance litigation. Matt’s practice includes advising secured creditors and trustees in relation to enforcement of security, restructuring, recovery and insolvency strategies and banker/customer disputes.

Matt also acts for insolvency practitioners in all aspects of corporate insolvency appointments such as voluntary administration, receiverships and liquidation. Matt conducts litigation on behalf of his clients.
Matt returned to Russell McVeagh in 2009 from Henry Davis York in Sydney, where he was a partner from 2002. He also spent a number of years at Herbert Smith in London.

  • Acting for the receivers of the Mainzeal Group.
  • Advising the security trustee and senior banks in relation to the Metroglass restructure.
  • Advising the administrators in the restructure and sale of the Whitcoulls and Borders New Zealand bookstore chains.
  • Advising senior and junior financiers on the restructure of the Yellow Pages Group.
  • Advised the receivers of OPI Pacific Finance Limited.
  • Advised the liquidator of an Australian unregistered scheme on asset recoveries in New Zealand.
  • Acted for Perpetual Trustee Company in its action against Bank of New York to enforce rights to collateral under $135m Mahogany note program supporting a credit default swap with Lehman Brothers.
  • Acted for the voluntary administrators, deed administrators and liquidators of the Fincorp Group.
  • Acted for the voluntary administrators and deed administrators of the CrossCity Motorway group.
  • Advised a major secured creditor in respect of its secured exposures to certain property trusts within the Centro Group.
  • Advising a major secured creditor in respect of exposures to Allco Finance Group
